Top Tips for Teacher

  1. What do you need to understand about your students’ reading skills?

    • Are you confident you have enough detail about students’ reading abilities? Do you know what to do with this information?
    • Do you use your reading data to inform lesson planning and individual student support?
    • What other evidence do you have that supports an understanding of need?
  2. Use NGRT standardised assessment scores to understand whether a student is reading at, above or below age-related expectations. Think about what scaffolding is needed to ensure all students can access learning.

  3. Do these assessment scores validate what you know about the student? If concerned, check the number of questions attempted and talk to the student about how they approached the assessment - did they try their best?

  4. Identify students' strengths and challenges. Does a student have a 'spiky' profile, i.e. NGRT shows they have a word reading challenge? How can you adapt your universal design to support that gap?

  5. Run an individual report to understand NGRT performance. Use the narrative in the Reader Profile Summary and Teaching and Learning Implications to support a deep understanding of strengths and challenges.
