Top Tips for Teacher
-
What do you need to understand about your students’ reading skills?
- Are you confident you have enough detail about students’ reading abilities? Do you know what to do with this information?
- Do you use your reading data to inform lesson planning and individual student support?
- What other evidence do you have that supports an understanding of need?
-
Use NGRT standardised assessment scores to understand whether a student is reading at, above or below age-related expectations. Think about what scaffolding is needed to ensure all students can access learning.
-
Do these assessment scores validate what you know about the student? If concerned, check the number of questions attempted and talk to the student about how they approached the assessment - did they try their best?
-
Identify students' strengths and challenges. Does a student have a 'spiky' profile, i.e. NGRT shows they have a word reading challenge? How can you adapt your universal design to support that gap?
-
Run an individual report to understand NGRT performance. Use the narrative in the Reader Profile Summary and Teaching and Learning Implications to support a deep understanding of strengths and challenges.
