Charlotte
SC 4+ / PC 1-3
Dependent reader. Reading is limited by poor comprehension and/or fluency.
This is Charlotte. She is able to read with accuracy but is not always able to demonstrate her understanding of the text, often needing extra time to think about her answers to questions. She struggles to read longer texts and then explain what she thinks in timed conditions. Because of her challenge with comprehension, she is a dependent reader and will need support to fully access texts. She may also struggle to summarise what she has just read. Students like Charlotte may read aloud well but this may mask the challenge she faces with reading and mean she is unconfident when talking and writing about language.
Key Questions
- Does Charlotte read often?
- Has anyone listened to her read?
- Is her cognitive load being taken up decoding a text, leaving little time to understand it?
- Is her comprehension better when given extra time?
- What is her cultural capital like? Can she use her background knowledge to help understand a text?
